Bungalow by a palm-fringed beach Diving Cuba Far off on the westernmost tip of Cuba lies a small palm tree paradise in the heart of the protected nature reserve Guanahacabibes. This area has an incredible variety of flora and fauna both on land and under water. The extraordinarily beautiful corals off the coast of Maria la Gorda Cuba are known as some of the most beautiful in the country, making this a premier Cuba diving location. Don't be surprised if a group of pelicans wander by your bungalow or if a school of brightly coloured fish come to visit you during a dive or if you're suddenly swimming next to a whale shark (in season). Your Cuba beach stay is the perfect place to relax and unwind for a few days while you let all the impressions from your Cuba travel sink in.Even the legends surrounding this palm tree beach are extraordinary. According to local lore, Maria la Gorda (Chubby Maria) was a Venezuelan woman who was once captured by pirates. She was left behind on this deserted beach and survived by selling her body to sailors. In the end she died a very rich and content woman. Time to trade in your slippers for flippers or simply spend a few days doing as little as possible while enjoying this paradise between the palm trees. Day 1: Arrival at Maria la GordaDuring the long drive from Havana through the Pinar del Rio province to Maria la Gorda Cuba, you'll cross through very diverse terrain. If you're coming from Vinales, the drive will take you about 4.5 hours. There really isn't any traffic to speak of, but you might have to stop a few times to let a few pigs, cows or horses cross the road. During the last few kilometres of the drive you'll follow the tantalising white sandy beaches of the west coast. Eventually you'll reach Maria la Gorda where your accommodation on this diving Cuba trip awaits you. There are 35 cabins discreetly scattered throughout the tropical garden near the beach. After you've checked in and dropped off your luggage, the sea is only a few steps away from your door. The hotel's restaurants are the only restaurants in the area - so you can enjoy dinner close to 'home'. Debit cards or credit cards are not accepted here, neither are they in most of the rest of Cuba. |

Day 2: Maria la GordaWe're sure your first day on the beaches of Maria la Gorda Cuba will be a good one! You'll finally have time to catch up on your reading in the shadow of the palm trees - while taking a quick dip in sea from time to time to cool off. You can also catch a glimpse of the abundant marine life and extraordinarily beautiful corals while snorkelling. If you would like to go on an excursion tomorrow, don't forget to make reservations today. In the evening you can enjoy dinner with a sea view at the hotel restaurant. |
Day 3: Maria la Gorda CubaAfter spending yesterday lounging, you might feel up to a little more action and adventure today. Although your reason for coming to Maria la Gorda in the first place is probably to spend oodles of time on the beach, you might also want to go on a guided hike to see what else Maria la Gorda Cuba has to offer. In the Guanahacabibes tropical forest you'll see many different varieties of exotic birds such as brightly coloured trogons, parakeets and different kinds of hummingbirds. If you would prefer to explore Maria la Gorda's marine life, you can join a Cuba diving or snorkelling tour at sea. The sea in this area is considered one of the best places to dive in Latin America. Experienced divers rave about the well preserved coral reefs and the diving options in this area; from caves and tunnels to vertical walls and coral canyons, and even the remains of Spanish galleons. You'll may see some unique black coral, many types of brightly coloured fish and from time to time even a whale shark. Head out early in the morning for the first dive and go for a second dive in the afternoon after lunch. At the end of the day, head over to the beach with a cocktail in hand to watch the last fiery sunset of your Cuba diving holiday. |

Day 4: Departure from Maria la Gorda CubaRefreshed and invigorated you'll leave the idyllic beaches of Maria la Gorda Cuba behind and you'll move on to your next Cuban destination. If you're continuing on to Trinidad or Santa Clara in western Cuba, we recommend making a pit-stop in Vinales to go on our tobacco tour. Even if Maria la Gorda is your final destination during your Cuba holiday, you may want to stop off at Vinales or Las Terrazas Cuba. If you choose to stay at one of these locations, you won't have to travel far to reach the airport in Havana for your flight back home. |
