Cuba diving - Cuba's premier beach

Cuba's coral beaches

Santa Lucia is Cuba's premier beach destination for those who want to go on a Cuba diving holiday but would like to combine it with some snorkelling as well.

Right off the coast of Santa Lucia you'll find one of the world's largest coral reefs, lined by an immaculate ivory beach that runs for about 20km. Behind the beach there's a flat coastal area dotted with hotels. Very few people live in this area, so you won't have to share these heavenly beaches with too many others. Without the distraction of a town centre nearby, you'll probably spend most of your time on you Cuba diving holiday on the beach, in the sea or enjoying your accommodation. Whenever you feel in the mood for a little more activity, there are plenty of activities organised by the hotel that you can participate in.

Santa Lucia is idyllically located on Cuba's northern peninsula in the Camaguey province. It's a 3.5-hour drive from Holguin airport and also about 3.5 hours away from the city of Camaguey. If you're planning on driving straight from Trinidad to Santa Lucia, be sure to start driving early in the morning.

Day 1: Arrival in Santa Lucia

During your Cuba diving holiday you'll stay at a comfortable resort with a very warm and welcoming atmosphere, made up of several low-rise buildings scattered in a tropical garden. The rooms are very nicely decorated and each has a bathroom with a shower and toilet, satellite television, radio, air conditioning and a telephone.

The resort also has a lobby, a restaurant that serves international cuisine, several bars and a large swimming pool with a sun terrace and sun beds. The resort's animation team will keep you entertained with sporting activities in the afternoon and shows in the evenings.

All meals, local drinks, snacks, non-motorised water sports, the use of beach towels and entrance to the disco are included. If Santa Lucia is the last stop on your Cuban holiday, then you'll drop off your hire car upon your arrival.

Day 2: Santa Lucia

The translucent waters of the Caribbean await... if you're into exploring the depths, today you'll have a wonderful opportunity to experience Cuba diving. The reef begins right off the coast and the water is generally a very comfortable 25 degrees Celsius. The average diving depth is about 25m. During a dive off the coast of Santa Lucia you'll see coral walls, shipwrecks, holes, swim throughs etc. Bull sharks come to visit Shark's point all year round. In between dives you can rest up at Coco Beach, a tiny deserted beach. Let us know if we can reserve a diving package for you prior to your arrival in Santa Lucia.

We don't recommend taking an actual diving course in Cuba during this Cuba diving holiday as most Cuban diving instructors do not speak English very well. Another reason why you're better off taking a course elsewhere is because the most widely accepted course (PADI) is not offered in Cuba.

Day 3: Santa Lucia

If you're flying out tomorrow, you won't be able to dive today... or at least not this afternoon. Of course you could also just pack a beach towel, sunscreen and sunglasses and head over to the beach to spend the rest of the day soaking up the Cuban sunshine and reading a good book.

If you want to be a little more active on your Cuba diving holiday you could book a day trip at the hotel's excursion desk. For instance you could visit Bahia de Nuevitas, a lagoon filled with hundreds of bright pink flamingos that live here all year round. The price of this excursion is approximately 59 CUC.

Day 4: Santa Lucia departure

If you wake up early you'll get to enjoy one last breathtaking sunrise on the beaches of Santa Lucia or perhaps you might want to wake up properly with a refreshing swim in the pool.

If this Cuba diving trip in Santa Lucia is your last stop on your Cuban holiday, then a transfer will take you to Holguin airport for your flight back to the UK.

If you're continuing travelling in Cuba, then you'll keep your rental car in Santa Lucia and head down to experience our Santiago trip for some Salsa dancing or, if you drive in the other direction, you can continue on for a stay in a traditional Trinidad Casa- a highlight of any Cuban holiday.
