Cosy Cayo Levisa IslandOur most secluded island paradise in CubaThere's a place in Cuba where life is uncomplicated and tourist shops still unknown - it's the island Cayo Levisa. This no-frills Cuban beach destination is just the place to go for long walks through the surf, to scour the white sands for beautiful seashells or - the most active thing you might want to do here - snorkelling.Cayo Levisa is located just off the coast of Cuba's tobacco province Pinar del Rio and has a daily ferry connection to the mainland. The island only has one hotel, a 3km stretch of white sandy beach and the most crystal-clear turquoise water you can imagine. Cayo Levisa accommodation is popular, but space is limited so it's best to book as early as you can. If you're flying home from Havana and would like to end your Cuba trip with a more lively beach getaway, we recommend staying in Varadero. The town's large beachfront resorts and the many tourist facilities available are guaranteed to make your stay there a comfortable one. You can find out more about Varadero and our other Cuba tours by clicking on our Cuba trips or Cuban holidays. |

Day 1: Arrival at Cayo LevisaCayo Levisa isn't a very lively or highly entertaining destination. There are only 2 ferries that sail to the island each day, so you don't want to miss them. At around 10:00 you'll set sail from the small harbour at Palma Rubia, crossing the crystal-clear waters until you reach Cayo Levisa. If you're arriving from Havana, you can take the afternoon boat to the island at 18:00. You'll simply leave your rental car behind at the harbour parking lot in Palma Rubia. The ferry ride takes about 30 minutes and if you arrive on the early ferry, you may not be able to check into your Cayo Levisa accommodation right away. No worries though, just keep you swimwear and a towel handy and you're all set to go. You can find a nice spot to lounge on the beach beneath a palm tree and enjoy the late morning sun and just stare dreamily into the horizon. By the time your stomach starts to growl, you can grab a bite to eat at the restaurant and drop off your things at your room afterwards. |

The cabanas at Villas Cayo Levisa are scattered around the beach and a tropical garden. Each cabana has air conditioning, television, a bathroom and a terrace. Like in most of Cuba, from time to time the electricity can go down and the warm water supply can falter which would affect your Cayo Levisa accommodation.. Villas Cayo Levisa has a restaurant, bar, shop and diving school. You can also hire surf boards and catamarans. Since there are quite a few mangroves on one part of the island, there are mosquitoes and sand fleas in periods of heavy rain. Don't forget to bring along bug repellent, just in case. |
Day 2: Cayo LevisaIf you're not a diving enthusiast, you can spend today lounging on the beaches by your Cayo Levisa accommodation. Not far from Levisa lies a teeny tiny island where writer Ernest Hemingway once sought refuge and found inspiration. He called the island Isla Paraíso, Paradise Island. If you're interested in going on a boat trip to this tiny bubble of paradise, you can check to see if the boat taking divers and snorkelers to sea will stop there. After an intense day of doing as little as possible, you'll find a (usually Creole) meal waiting for you at the end of the day. After dinner you can become acquainted with the bartender and try out some of his ingenious concoctions. Guess what the main ingredient of these cocktails is? Rum! "During our stay here we asked the cleaning leady to teach us a few salsa moves.... què bien!" |

Day 3: Say adios to your Cayo Levisa accommodationAfter breakfast, at around 9:00, the ferry will take you back to civilisation on the mainland. This module ends when you arrive in Palma Rubia.Cayo Levisa accommodation is extremely limited throughout the year. If you are not able to stay on Cayo Levisa, an enjoyable alternative can be found at Maria la Gorda Cuba. From here you can go on a Cuba tobacco tour in Viñales or you can visit the coffee plantations in the Sierro de Rosario mountains on a Las Terrazas Cuba tour. If this is the end of your Cuba trip, you'll drive back to Havana for your flight back to the UK. |
