Cayo Largo accommodation- Postcard perfect

Soft white beaches of Cayo Largo

Cayo Largo (del Sur) is the largest of more than 300 cayos or keys. The island is part of the Los Canarreos Archipelago located 177km south of Havana in the middle of the Caribbean Sea. It's overgrown with low-growth vegetation, has a wonderful Caribbean atmosphere and very diverse tropical flora and fauna.

The island's virgin white beaches and crystalline warm waters make Cayo Largo the perfect island getaway. You probably won't be able to find a more spectacularly blue sea or whiter beaches anywhere else on earth. In fact, this may very well be the most beautiful beach you've ever seen (it's definitely in our top 3... ). Obviously the water is simply divine to swim in and there are excellent diving and snorkelling opportunities at the coral reefs right off the coast. The Cayo Largo accommodation we use is all-inclusive, so you can relax, eat and drink to your hearts content.

If you're afraid you'll get bored here (we can't imagine ever wanting to leave, but just in case... ), you can also visit another tiny island nearby - Cayo Iguana. As its name suggests, the island is completely inhabited by iguanas.

If you would like to see where you could go either before or after this Cuba beach stay, take a look at our short Cuba trips, or longer Cuban holidays.

Day 1: Havana - Cayo Largo

Today your Cayo Largo Cuba tour starts out with an early morning transfer to the airport where you'll board a domestic flight to Cayo Largo. The view from high above the Caribbean is simply breathtaking.

When you arrive at the island's airport, in reality just an air strip, the air plane's door will be opened and the tropical warmth and that island holiday feeling will rush up to greet you. After a short slightly bumpy ride in a minibus you'll arrive at your resort. All of the island's low-rise resorts are hidden away in serene tropical nooks along the coastline. Once you've had a chance to freshen up for a bit, you can head out into your own tropical paradise of radiant blue seas, idyllic beaches and strategically placed palm trees....

Day 2-3: Cayo Largo

During your Cayo Largo Cuba trip you'll spend the night at the Sol Pelicano Hotel; a 4-star hotel belonging to the Sol Melia hotel chain. All rooms have either a balcony or a terrace, air conditioning, television with satellite connection, a telephone and a safe (for hire).

Hotel Sol Pelicano has a buffet restaurant, bar, swimming pool and sun terrace. There's also a watersports centre and an animation team on staff to entertain guests with activities during the day and in the evening. Our Cayo Largo accommodation at this hotel is on an all-inclusive basis. This means that all meals and local drinks are included during your trip. In most countries an all-inclusive hotel can be somewhat unappealing due to the en-mass approach and hoards of tourists that stay at them. However, since there are very few alternatives on the island this is your best option. All that's left for you to do on your Cuban holiday is to concentrate on relaxing!

Day 4: Cayo Largo - Havana

Depending on the schedule for your flights for today, you'll probably have an entire day left to spend on Cayo Largo. Most flights are scheduled for take-off at the end of the afternoon. A transfer will take you to the airport where you'll board a flight back to Havana at the end of your Cayo Largo Cuba tour.

Care to go diving off the coast of Cayo Largo? If you do, keep in mind that you shouldn't dive within 24 hours of flying. For more information, talk to your dive master or check out the dive manual.

The coral reef off the coast of Cayo Largo is stunning and is excellent for snorkelling in shallow water and diving in deeper waters, starting at 15m. You'll pay about £35 for an individual dive, but if you book several dives in advance the average price per dive will be lower. During our dive we saw 7 Eagle Rays float by only a few metres away from us. Later on we saw a large sea turtle, nurse sharks and countless colourful fish in every shape and size. The staff who will assist during your dive on this Cuba trip are very professional and speak English.
